Dear Reader,
I can be a real creature of habit. Wait – is this the guy who has been writing about change for the past few weeks?! Yes. Believe me. I can be very happy in a familiar groove. Whether it’s the food I eat, or the clothing I wear, I can easily gravitate to the familiar. When I was in third grade, I took a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to school every day for a year. Granted, that’s a while ago, but it gives you the idea.
How do habits relate to dancing with change in your life? One obvious way is that habits can limit your flexibility. That’s why it’s good to shake things up once in a while. On the other hand, some habits can actually help you incorporate change in your life. These days, I have a habit of reading a few pages from a book on consciousness or spirituality, writing for a few minutes and meditating before I go on to the rest of my day. The whole process takes twenty minutes, but it centers me in my spirit. When you are centered in who you really are, you are more ready and able to respond to change, to go in any direction, to initiate new actions that come from your heart.
We all have choices about our habits; after all, we create them. So the question is, what are your habits, and do they serve you, or do you serve them? I am talking not just about habitual behavior, but also habitual thinking. Do you tend to think that life is scary, or difficult? Do you tend to think that life is exciting and full of possibility? Two very different vibes, right? You choose. You can change your behavior and your thinking – including the thought that change must be difficult. The beauty of doing inner work is that it helps you make the changes most important to you, rather than the changes society would have you think are most important. Finding and developing your intuitive voice can help you follow your inner compass – making you an expert at intuitive cartography!
I honor your loving heart,
John
