Dear Reader,
In order to fully develop your intuition, you must allow space within yourself to be surprised, and to act on that surprise without hesitation.
Here in Lerwick Harbor, the sun rises over the island of Bressay. When I get up at 7AM, it is still dark, with the first hint of light arriving shortly before 7:30. From that point, sunrise unfolds very slowly, and this morning I noticed that by 9AM, the sun was still not above the horizon.
I suddenly felt, through my whole being, a powerful urge to see it happen, to see that sun break the horizon and feel its light on my face. Without thinking, I raced upstairs, threw on some clothes and rushed out the door. I made a sharp left and followed the narrow street, passing stone houses that line the water’s edge. This street leads to a walking path that winds along high bluffs and until it arrives at a point of land called “The Horse’s Head.”
At the highest spot on the path, I stopped and waited for the sun. Seagulls turned and glided among the cliffs, and currents within currents traced paths on the harbor’s surface. The sun cleared a hill on Bressay and rose through a few hazy clouds at the horizon. The land grew brighter, a few houses high behind me caught the first rays of light and finally, with a crescent moon at my right shoulder, I felt direct light and warmth on my skin.
I could have left soon after, but I stayed. I stayed long enough to see a faint path of light cross the harbor from the sun to me, and become brighter with bursts of light pulsing along the watery path. I stayed to feel the warmth grow on my face, and to feel a glow in my chest that told me I had left personal space, dictated by time and thought, and entered the eternal space of presence and pure appreciation. In this space, I felt deeply that all was right with the world. I stayed until the sun was well above Bressay, and until I felt complete – for me, a very specific feeling in my heart of energy diminishing and a cooling down that signals closure.
Dear reader, do you think I did the right thing in rushing out of the house this morning in search of the sun? I do. It was intuitive guidance, felt because I continually practice allowing the space within to feel/hear the unexpected and to act on it, whether it makes sense to my rational mind or not. Every time you practice, you strengthen your ability to receive guidance. But you must follow it. If you hear it and don’t act, what are you strengthening? Your doubt. Inactivity. Later on, perhaps when you receive guidance about an important decision in your life, you need to be ready to receive, trust, and act – without doubt.
A few final thoughts: take the time, at least once in a while, to feel the sun on your face. It can help you create space within, and remind you, no matter what is going on in your life, that all is right with the world. Take the time to really soak it in; stay longer than you thought you might, even if that means allowing thoughts of all you need to get done later to leave your mind. Linger. Finally, practice feeling the moment when you are complete. In doing so, you will have greatly strengthened your intuitive ability. Perhaps, also, you will notice that feeling of well-being staying with you as you continue through the day.
I honor your loving heart,
John
