Dear Reader,
Welcome to day two of the Soul Series. Yesterday we talked about the idea that you are a soul, as opposed to the common belief that you have a soul. Today, I will focus on the messages your soul places in plain sight for you – and keeps placing there until you listen and act!
The messages your soul sends are most often about things you truly value and love, on the deepest levels. That includes places you would love to go, near or far; people you would love to spend time with; and actions you would love to take. Several years ago, I attended a free writing workshop at a Barnes & Noble on the Upper East Side in Manhattan, purely because my soul told me to go. Because I listened to that message, acted on it, and followed up afterward, I ended up spending three years in a writers group and getting published not long after that!
Listen.
Act.
Follow up.
Do those three things, based on the messages your soul gives you, and your life will change quickly – and often dramatically.
But wait, if your soul’s wisdom is so powerful, why would you possibly not act on the messages you receive?
Fear. That’s it; there’s only one reason.
Fear may take many different disguises – procrastination, doubt, “practicality,” being “too busy” – but they all trace back to fear. Here’s another example from my own life. I moved to New York City in the early 80s to dance. Was it my soul’s desire? Absolutely. Did I audition for dance opportunities? Maybe twice in ten years. Why? I was afraid. Afraid of failing; afraid of rejection; afraid I wouldn’t be able to handle it if I did get chosen.
That is a little painful to admit. And to be honest; fear wasn’t the only reason I didn’t audition; over time, I discovered that I liked choreographing more than dancing in other people’s work. Then I discovered that I loved improvising more than choreographing. I was led from improvising and “getting my mind out of the way” to developing my intuition – and here I am. So it all worked out, and I have absolutely no regrets.
Along the way, I was often held back by fear, but I also never completely stopped listening to the messages from my soul. If I passed up one opportunity because of fear, my soul simply gave me a new suggestion.
I share this story with you, dear reader, in case you have ever been held back by fear, and wonder when, if ever, if you will be able to get back on track, reconnect with your soul, and do what you really came here to do.
Take heart. Your soul is insistent. It will not give up on you.
Listen. Act. Follow up. And if you are afraid, know that your soul sees a bigger picture, one that does not include fear.
Learn to trust it. You can.
Tomorrow we will talk about intuition, the voice of your soul.
I honor your loving heart,
John
