Dear Reader,
For today’s installment, I want to share with you a flash of guidance I experienced in 2003 that became the driving force behind my work today. This moment also gave me a profound insight that was life-changing for me, and may change your life as well, if you are willing.
In 2003, I was still living in New York City. Only two years after 9/11, I was deep in a period of study, reflection and self-exploration. I was developing my intuition with intuitive guide Sonia Choquette, dancing regularly in a Five Rhythms class, and attending a New Thought sunday service. I was writing a chapter for a book on creativity, and newly out of a serious relationship. It was a time of intense growth.
One day I was commuting home early from my job in New Jersey. I got into Penn Station around rush hour, and started a zig-zag subway journey to get from the West Side of Manhattan to the Upper East side. No route was ideal, but on this day, I chose to ride one stop north on the West Side #1 train, then across to the East Side on the Grand Central shuttle. From there, I would transfer to the 4, 5, or 6 train running up the East Side.
The shuttle was packed, but I got a spot near the front of the train, and endured the short trip to Grand Central. Our train unloaded, and a crowd of passengers poured out, heading for the passageway leading to the East Side trains. At roughly the same time, an East Side train must have just unloaded, because as I was hurrying toward the tunnel, a horde of people came surging the other way, directly toward me.
That’s when it happened.
As I was walking, and taking in all the faces of the humanity approaching me, I suddenly saw them as the most beautiful people in the world. I looked at the faces of people carrying backpacks, briefcases and handbags, people of all colors, genders and educational backgrounds, and I saw them not as a crowd blocking my way, but as divine beings.
Also, in that moment, I had a clear, specific thought in my mind. It seemed to come from nowhere, which is the way a lot of my guidance feels. This thought was not linked to any other thought, nor did it lead to any additional thought. It just burst into my mind, registered, and was gone. That thought was:
“Souls, expressing.”
I felt, I knew without analyzing it, that the thought referred to all those people rushing toward and now past me.
I kept walking, more slowly now, not caring about making the next train, and took in the sight. With great tenderness and love, I saw them for what they really were – souls.
I witnessed them doing what all souls do – even while rushing to make a train – expressing.
What were they expressing? Their soul-ness, their divinity, their light – through the vehicle of their human being-ness.
And in that moment, I realized that, if they were all souls expressing, so was I.
That insight, and that beauty lasted all the way through the tunnel, as I saw students, nurses, brokers, writers, shop clerks, all swarming past me.
The feeling of how deeply I had been touched lasted for days.
The insight from that guidance, and the gratitude for that gift, has never left me.
Now, and always, I consider myself as a soul and I see others as souls. This vision stays with me in daily life, and it helps me with my clients, when I see who they really are and what they really want – deep in their souls.
Now here’s the thing; it’s a two-part insight:
- We are all souls, and I have written about that in a previous post in this series.
- As souls, we are here to express who we really are, as well as expressing the beauty of the Oneness we are all part of, by whatever name you call it.
You are a soul. You are here to express. The question is, what are you called to express, and are you expressing it fully?
I honor your loving heart,
John
