Dear Reader,
Are you making enough sound in your life? I am not, and I intend to do something about it! The simplest form of sound is breath. Magnified, a breath becomes a sigh. A sigh with vocalization becomes a moan, wail or affirmation of contentment. Any of these, given shape, becomes a tone. A tone has the capability to direct energy to a specific are a of your body, your awareness or your being, and can be a very powerful tool for clearing frustration, anger, or confusion.
OM – the most fundamental tone of all, in so many traditions.
AH – perhaps the most primal, and most heart centered tone.
You can find your own tone, depending on your intention, need and purpose. It may be constant from day to day, or it may change from moment to moment. One day, when I was living in New York City, I had an appointment to go to, but I also had a very upset stomach. I was on the subway, standing because there were no seats, clinging to the pole to maintain my balance. I probably don’t need to tell you that it’s no fun being on the subway when you don’t feel well.
Without thinking, I started to tone, very softly so that only I could hear. My tone was barely more than a vibration, but I could hear and feel it inside – try it, it really is possible. It only took a few seconds to play with the focus and pitch of the tone until I could feel it in my stomach, right where I felt the most pain. In a few more seconds, my pain was gone. It did not come back.
Was I happy or what?!? When you use the tools, dear reader, and they work – celebrate! Learn from your actions. Remember what you did, how you did it, and how that energy of success felt – and that tool will be at your beck and call for life.
A tone expanded and added to can become song. Song is a powerful channel of energy and emotion, capable of creating great motivation. A tone expanded and added to can also become speech – and your speech, your real truth spoken to the world, is perhaps your most powerful tool of all. Stifling your own speech, when you need to speak out from your deepest self, can actually physically hurt.
All sound is vibration. Vibration is movement. As such, sound is an integral part of who we are, on the most fundamental and most complex levels. Use it, play with it, create yourself anew with it, every opportunity you can find. Sound can help you make some of the fastest shifts you will ever experience – but you have to remember to do it. So do I.
I’ll check back in a few days, dear reader, and we’ll see how we’re doing!
I honor your loving heart,
John
