Dear Reader,
Do you ever do something without knowing why you are doing it – you just have a feeling that you really want to do it? No, I am not talking about doing something because of a sense of obligation, or because you’re acting from habit or a craving. I am talking about a strong feeling, coming from nowhere, defying rational explanation, to take action… just because!
Often, that’s the way your intuition works. It might be a sudden thought, unrelated to whatever is going on around you, and quiet, but very clear and – if you ignore it at first – very insistent. Often, those thoughts leave me asking myself “Now where did that come from???”
Some of my best guidance has feels like that.
Last weekend, when Louise and I were out driving around Shetland on a Sunday afternoon, I suddenly felt strongly that I wanted to see the Atlantic Ocean. Where we live, on the East side of Shetland, we are on the North Sea, but the West side of the island faces the Atlantic. I knew I had to see it. So we did.
I still don’t know why I felt that way. Nor do I try to figure it out. Sometimes guidance is like that. Sometimes, after you act on guidance, the reason behind it becomes immediately clear. Sometimes the reason for your intuitive hit only becomes clear weeks, months or years later. Sometimes it never becomes clear, but it’s important to trust and act anyway. That faith in your own inner wisdom is like a muscle; the more you use it, the stronger it gets and the more accurate it becomes.
The strength of this intuitive muscle is especially important when someone asks you to do something you don’t want to do. You suddenly get that message from nowhere saying: “Don’t do it.” It can take a little extra courage, because the person asking may be disappointed, but because you trust your intuition, you say no anyway.
If questioned about why you are saying no, my teacher Sonia gave me a great comeback, just say: “It’s a Soul thing.” Pretty much brings that line of questioning to a close!
So, dear reader, maybe this is a good year to act on that thought from nowhere a little more often – “just because.”
I honor your loving heart,
John
