Dear Reader,
After my trip to The States, I am taking a little quiet time to see what stands out from my visit in Maine. One thing that has stayed with me, in a very heartwarming way, is the company I kept with so many animals. In our family home in the woods, I saw – along with the usual complement of noisy chipmunks and squirrels – a mink scrambling along the lake’s shore, a fox, a couple of deer, a feisty kingfisher, a majestic great blue heron, and bald eagles that took my breath away when they flew.
At night, with only the screen door closed, I could hear the soft, deep hoot of an owl somewhere out in the trees, along with occasional high-pitched, haunting cries from loons out on the lake. These sounds were comforting, reminding me that I wasn’t alone. Other life was around me, going about its business as I read my book.
More than just providing comfort, my non-human neighbors took me out of my intellect, beyond my ego-mind into that sense of self as part of something much bigger. They reminded me that we humans are part – and only one part – of the unfolding of life itself.
Dear reader, it is good to be reminded of such things once in a while.
I honor your loving heart,
John
