Dear Reader,
Today is the first day of spring, and here in Southwestern Maine we received an unexpected gift – a foot of snow! The forecasters sure didn’t predict this one; I don’t think they even gave the storm a name. Most of it had fallen by the time I got out of bed and looked out the window this morning.
Louise and I went for a walk up the road, sinking deep in the snow, taking measurements along the way with our yardstick and making snow angels along the way. Our mailbox had taken another bashing from the plow. The box, tilted at a crazy angle, was barely peeking over the snow bank – but it was still standing.
A foot of new snow – what a glorious way to celebrate the Vernal Equinox, and what a wonderful reminder that life is, ultimately, unpredictable. I do see that as a gift. How happy would we really be if life was completely predictable?
And yet… how much time do we spend trying to turn the “unknown” into the “known?” A lot! Maybe we would benefit by simply receiving the gift of the unexpected, at least a little more often, and seeing it as such.
What better day to practice than the first day of spring, a time of change, renewal and new beginnings?
Dear reader, did something unexpected happen today in your life that you can see as a gift, if you choose to? If so, could it provide a little seed of joy you could plant now, for a new beginning in the months ahead? If not, maybe your gift will come in the next few days, so keep your eyes open.
If you remember to look for gifts in the unexpected, you will see them everywhere.
I honor your loving heart,
John
