Dear Reader,
I don’t always use this approach, but sometimes I like to pick a theme for the year as a way of helping me focus on what I want to create and experience. I have found that a theme can be a creative, fun way to avoid analysis and cut to the core, the essence of what I want to create in the months ahead.
A theme can be lengthy, or it can be as short as one word. My theme for 2006 was “joy.” That was the year I went to Translucent You, a life-changing workshop in Hawaii run by Sonia Choquette and her sister Cuky, and the year I met my soulmate. Bingo!
If I were to choose one word as the theme for this year (and I haven’t, until this moment) it might be “Initiate.” This feels like a year for me to launch new programs and take on new projects. I may not consciously focus on the word itself much in the coming months, other than to write it in a highly visible spot.
It may be that later in the year, I’ll decide that “initiate” is not quite right, that the word is really leading me to something deeper – if so, I’ll adjust along the way. For now, it feels right.
What might be your theme for 2011, dear reader? Joy? Healing? Peace? Patience? Chances are, your soul knows. Give it a try. Choose what feels right, for now, put it in your heart and let it start to work. Let it seep inward toward your core and flow outward from your center. Allow it to be your guiding light, keeping you pointed toward true North.
Some of you, of course, might not want to pin the essence of your year on a single word. If that’s you, write more – or paint it, or dance it, or just live it. But you may learn something important by trying to represent your theme in some tangible way. If 2011 is one chapter in the book of your life, what would you like the title to be?
Have fun exploring – see you in March!
I honor your loving heart,
John

I’ve thought about this a lot and the theme I’ve come up with for 2011 is Dedication. You know I have a tendency to flit from one thing to the other as my mood and attention shifts. This is the year to focus my attention on a few things and really see them through.

My word for the year 2011 is: RECEIVING!!!
I am ready and excited to receive what is coming.
Was off to a rocky start, but i will keep opening. 🙂

Hi Uma – That is a great theme! Receiving is such an important part of the flow of life. If we are blocked (or blocking ourselves, for whatever reason) from receiving, it interferes with our ability to adapt, change, grow and give of ourselves. Do keep opening; you are on the right track!
To an Excellent Year,
John

Hi Louise – Thanks for your comment, and I love your theme! While I can see within the tendency you described a real gift – in terms of flexibility, and the ability to flow with ease from one situation to another – dedication and the consistency that goes with it provides the balance of a different kind of gift. And we are all called on to be more balanced and multi-faceted as change accelerates in our world!
Much Love,
John
