Dear Reader,
Yes, today is the first day of Spring! I am feeling it, despite also feeling the chill, earlier, of a 6 degree Fahrenheit Maine morning. The earth is moving at its own pace, regardless of how we humans label the days.
Speaking of our moving earth, today is more than the Spring Equinox; it is also the day of a new moon and full solar eclipse. The heavenly bodies are busy! So is a friend of mine who, right now, is on a small island off the coast of Norway, above the Arctic Circle, to view the solar eclipse. Last night I wished clear skies for her.
As for me?
Today, I am just loving the word “vernal.”
Definitions of the word, along with the obvious – Spring – include “fresh” and “new.” I like that energy.
Roots of the word include the Latin “vemus” meaning again, Spring, and a similar root in Greek. Also listed is the Sanskrit word “Vasant” which also means Spring and appears in the name Vasant Panchami, a Hindu festival of Spring.
Fresh. New.
Yes.
For some reason, I also found myself looking up the definition of the word “green.” OK, so green is certainly a color associated with Spring, at least here in Maine. And the French word for green is “Vert.” Vert may not be related to vernal as a root, but…
I came across another definition I love – that of “green” as a transitive verb. First of all, I think green used as a verb is inspiring, as is the definition: refresh, rejuvenate.
Refresh. Rejuvenate.
And finally, dear reader, I am led to a blessing for you on this day, the first day of Spring:
May you find the time today, and whenever needed, to “green” your days, your soul – your very life.
I honor your loving heart,
John
