Dear Reader,
What triggers your creativity? What engages it, locks it in and drives it forward? If cooking is your creative outlet, do you take the time to find recipes that inspire you? Do you have favorite pots and pans that you love to work with? If you are a writer, do you have a desk that you love, or a favorite cafe where you can go to be inspired in your writing?
The creative process is different for everyone, and spending a little time reflecting on yours can be very worthwhile. Perhaps even more important questions to ask yourself are whether you recognize the things that truly inspire you, and whether you indulge your process fully – or whether you play it small.
Recently I ordered a flip chart and set of markers from an office supply company. Although delivery was delayed by the volcano in Iceland, my flip chart finally arrived this week, and I love it! It allows me to be big and bold, to work with different colors and play with spatial arrangements as I create my plans and outlines. I recognize that working this way inspires me; I make different choices and get qualitatively different intuitive guidance working this way than I would have using a Word document with a list of bullets.
Back to you, dear reader; when you are scheming up your biggest, boldest dreams, do you honor them by working the way that suits you best? I hope you do. If a particular chair to sit in inspires you to dream, use it. If mind mapping is your thing, go for it. For that matter, if you want to scrawl your plan in the dirt with a stick, take a picture of it, upload it to your computer and make it your screen saver, for God’s sake, do it!
Ultimately, of course, the important thing is not the method, but the process itself. Your intent is to engage your deepest wisdom, carry your inspiration forward with passion and birth that dream, whether it is the perfect stew or a shattering poem. No need to make your creativity dependent on the kind of pen you use, but do find the methods and the tools that unleash your full, most deeply inspired creativity. You deserve it, and so does everyone who will benefit from your work of art.
